Artist Statement
Nemuro City, located in eastern Hokkaido - the northernmost part of Japan - is where the cherry blossoms bloom the latest in Japan. Beginning with the thaw in mid-March, Spring passes slowly. It is a region with a low altitude and flat high-rise marshes that cannot be seen anywhere else in Hokkaido. It is cool all year round, blessed with abundant nature, and is widely known as a landing site for many wild birds.
I photograph fragments of Nature that most people cannot see, such as dead grass that appears as the snow melts, and trees that decay in the wetlands. As I walk around Nemuro, I realize how small humans are, and I feel like I am constantly confronting the Cycle of Life.
“Nemuro Spring” can be said to be a requiem for what has passed away, and a record of the lives being nurtured.
It is a great pleasure to have a solo exhibition in this gallery. I hope everyone enjoys the photographs that I have been creating since 2011 in Nemuro, and my new photobook that was published this past summer.
